The public holiday Sumardagurinn fyrsti or First Day of Summer is today, Thursday, April 19th, 2018. Today the Icelanders take the day off and put on “summer clothes” meaning jackets instead of parkas, shirts instead of woollen jumpers – but please…no, no skirts or shorts -it’s too cold for that! The scout movement organizes family programs in parks and that’s where the families are having fun in the afternoon.
When the locals meet each other today they congratulate saying happy first day of summer or gleðilegan sumardaginn fyrsta in Icelandic. There is every reason to be happy, celebrate and congratulate each other because the typical first day of summer is cold, rainy or stormy. In this country the average temperature during summer is +13°C, the average temperature in winter is 0°C so there isn’t a big difference. There is every reason to welcome summer with celebrations!
